The castle of Bolsena, also known as the Monaldeschi della Cervara fortress, is an ancient structure whose history has its roots in the year 1000, when it was commissioned by Pope Adrian IV as a defense against the threats of the time. Over the centuries, it passed to the Monaldeschi in 1295, undergoing renovations in the 14th century and, more recently, an impressive restoration between 1989 and 1990. This castle, now transformed into the territorial museum of Lake Bolsena, offers a fascinating exhibition of Etruscan, Roman and medieval finds, distributed over three floors.
The castle Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara offers magnificent views of Bolsena and the lake. The climb through the winding, romantic streets is worth the visit of the castle. Inside the castle you will find the Museo Territoriale del Lago di Bolsena with exhibits from the Etruscan, Roman and medieval periods.
