Between 1949 and 1952, rubble railways brought the rubble of the destroyed city center around the Neumarkt here to the rubble mountain. Today, visitors from up here have a fantastic panoramic view and a good overview of the entire Ostra area with the harbor, flood channel, Elbe meadows, former slaughterhouse and sports park.

Do you recognize it? Caspar David Friedrich's famous painting “The Great Enclosure near Dresden” (1831/32) could show the linden avenue laid out in 1725 along Pieschener Allee in the Ostragehege. The historic ferry stop to Pieschen, a former fishing village and now a district of Dresden, is also located here.

The Ostragehege is part of the wide floodplain landscape of the Elbe. It is named after the village of Ostra, which was first mentioned in 1206. The name Ostra, which comes from Sorbian, means “island”. Friedrich's painting could show the perspective from the Neustadt side.

Here you can look out over the extensive area from the rubble mountain and let your gaze wander - just like Friedrich once did.
