The market in Schwerin is a rectangular historic marketplace in Schwerin's old town, whose history dates back to the founding of the city in 1160. To distinguish it from the shelf market of 1832 independent Neustadt (Schelfe) he is also referred to as Altstädtischer market. It is located south of the cathedral. Four of the buildings framing the square are listed buildings.

The old town market got its base after the great city fire of the year 1651. This area was expanded 1783-85 a few meters to the north and measures today 60 × 52 meters. The market is bordered to the north by the New Building (pillared building), to the east by the Town Hall, the Town Hall with its historical façade reconstructed in 1975, three newly built gabled houses in 1975, and to the south by Late Classicist houses dating back to 1840 and to the west other town houses, of which a half-timbered house was partially preserved. In front of the New Building is the Lion Monument.

For the most part the pedestrian zone is Schmiedestraße, Schusterstraße and Puschkinstraße (formerly Königsstraße) as well as two passages from the butcher's market. North of the market square is the Schwerin Cathedral.
