St. Mary is Protestant, it is the highest church in the whole area and can be seen from afar. A detour is worthwhile because of the old sundial.

The three-aisled hall church was built between 1290 and 1340. One source calls the time around 1346 for the consecration. It is the successor of a late Romanesque sacred building, which managed from 1330 the provost Kembergs. In 1415, the sacristy and the southeastern porch were built according to plans by Matthias Löser. From 1856 to 1859, according to plans by Friedrich August Ritter, the Neo-Gothic, 86-meter-high west tower towering over the city was erected after the old tower had collapsed.

According to tradition, Martin Luther, who was 14 times in Kemberg, probably just as often preached in the church. Luther's coffin was laid out in the church on the night of February 21st to 22nd, 1546. The church had an altar by Lucas Cranach the Younger from 1565, which fell victim to a fire on the night of 8 to 9 November 1994. After years of discussion and subsequent competition, the artist Arnulf Rainer from Austria created a modern cross for the sanctuary.
