First of all, I am pleased that over 100 cyclists now recommend this highlight with me. You're welcome!
The Ems branch runs from Herbrum to the beginning of Aschendorf. Its existence as a side arm results from the Herbrumer Schleuse, which only made it possible to decouple the upper reaches of the Ems from the tides through the creation of the Dortmund-Ems Canal at this point, and thus also made it possible to carry cargo traffic on the Ems in this way. As a result, damming became necessary on the Ems branch.
As a special highlight we will also find the Sehel airfield of the same name "Alte Ems", whose take-off and landing runway extends right up to the Ems cycle path. On weekends you can sometimes watch exciting take-off or landing sequences here. In any case, the view from the Sperrwerrk on the Emslauf in both directions is fun.

The first historical mention of Herbrum dates back to the year 890.

Until 1803, Herbrum belonged to the Meppen office in the Lower Monastery of Münster. In 1803 the Niederstift was dissolved on the basis of the decisions of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss. The Amt of Meppen and thus also Herbrum was assigned to the Duke of Arenberg as compensation for the loss of his areas on the left bank of the Rhine.

In 1810 Herbrum became part of the French Empire. It belonged to the arrondissement of Lingen in the département de l'Ems Supérieur. The Duchy of Arenberg-Meppen was assigned to the Kingdom of Hanover in 1814/15 by the resolutions of the Congress of Vienna. The offices were reorganized and Herbrum became part of the Aschendorf office.

In 1866, after the German War, the Kingdom of Hanover was annexed by Prussia and thus became a Prussian province. In 1885 the offices were dissolved and the province of Hanover was divided into new districts, and the district of Aschendorf was created from the district of Aschendorf.
