Franz Gertsch, born in 1930 in Mörigen, is one of the most important contemporary Swiss artists. From his international breakthrough at documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 to the present day, Gertsch has created a rich pictorial and graphic work that makes a very special approach to reality. For Franz Gertsch, reality is not only a painterly, but also a conceptual challenge. Although it is based on photos or slide projections, the images follow their own logic, which aims at the absolute coherence of all elements.
The woodcuts occupy a special place in the work of Franz Gertsch. In a hitherto unknown precision in the execution and in monumental formats, which reach the limits of the feasible even in papermaking, Gertsch has opened up new dimensions with this traditional medium. With the Museum Franz Gertsch in Burgdorf, not far from his home and work Rüschegg, his life's work is adequately appreciated.
