The church is the oldest building in the city of Kremmen, which received city rights as early as 1298. The 13th-century choir room made of fieldstone shows the original size of the church. The three-nave nave was added later. The increase in the choir and the installation of two galleries were the last expansion. Above the surviving apostles' choir there was a star choir, which led around behind the altar. The tower, originally crowned with a wooden traffic light, burned down in 1917 due to a lightning strike. It was completed slightly lower in 1928. On the site of the three bronze bells that had to be delivered during the First World War, there have been three steel bells with an electric chime since 1928. The electrically operated movement dates from the same year.

St. Nikolai is the oldest preserved building in the city of Kremmen. The construction period is limited to the period from 1250 to 1265. It contains a baroque altar and other centuries-old facilities.

A visit to the open church is certainly also interesting for non-believers.
