Old Town Hall, Esslingen am Neckar
The Old Town Hall in Esslingen am Neckar is, alongside Esslingen Castle, one of the landmarks of the historic old town.
Description
The Old Town Hall in Esslingen am Neckar was built around 1420 as a municipal trading and tax house and, with its magnificent half-timbered south gable, is considered the masterpiece of Alemannic half-timbered architecture. Between 1586 and 1589, Heinrich Schickhardt built a gable front with a delicate clock tower in the Renaissance style on the north side. In 1592, an astronomical clock was added with the allegorical figures of Justitia and Temperantia, which move with each hour. An eagle, the heraldic animal of the Free Imperial City, flaps its wings. On the occasion of a renovation in 1926, the citizens of Esslingen donated a carillon with 24 bells. Through another citizens' initiative in 1976, the carillon was renewed again and five bells were added. This gives it a range of more than two octaves. There are more than 200 songs available, which are controlled by perforated tapes. The Old Town Hall is one of the most remarkable monuments and sights in the historic city center of Esslingen. It was built around 1422 as a half-timbered municipal department store and tax house. The characteristic half-timbered construction of the "Swabian Man" can still be seen on the south, east and west sides.

Opposite the old town hall is the 'New Town Hall' from the 18th century. Named after its first owners, the Barons of Palm, it is also known as the Upper Palm Building.
