Structural Condition = Danger of Collapse, Danger to Life!!!!
Schülzburg Castle is situated on a mountain spur above the small, tranquil village of Anhausen and is visible from afar when approaching through the Lauter Valley. The complex is privately owned and in danger of collapse. It is closed to the public.
The castle is a classic spur castle, which was later converted into a palace. The slopes of the spur drop steeply towards the valley. The enormous building complex, consisting of four stories, is very impressive from the village. Furthermore, the number of windows in the buildings and the types of stone used indicate that Schülzburg was expanded and renovated in different eras.
Only a few foundation walls remain of the outer bailey. It was separated from the inner bailey by a dry moat with masonry walls. The inner bailey itself consists of several buildings, including oriels, latrines, and two old defensive towers, or stair towers. The buildings were accessed from a small courtyard, protected to the south by a barbican. Access was via a bridge spanning the dry moat and leading into the courtyard. The castle later built within the fortress now consists only of the four outer walls, which still stand up to the roof gable. Even the stair tower still exists and partially retains its original staircase. Inside the castle, in addition to the numerous windows, the foundations of the lowest floor are still visible. Cellar vaults and their entrances are also said to still exist.
