The term "Calhau" means "pebble" or "rock" in Portuguese and refers here to the rocky coastal plain below the imposing cliffs of Achadas da Cruz. This plain is also known as Fajã da Quebrada Nova, a fertile headland created by centuries of landslides. Today, it is used by local farmers who grow vegetables and other crops.

The easiest way to reach the coastal plain is via the Teleférico das Achadas da Cruz cable car. Alternatively, you can take the steep Vereda do Calhau footpath, which requires surefootedness and a head for heights. The descent takes about 90 minutes and leads through impressive scenery. The combination of steep cliffs, the roaring sea, and the secluded atmosphere makes Calhau das Achadas da Cruz a special place for nature lovers and photographers.
