The Mannheim Observatory was once world famous, on par with Greenwich. No wonder that here was the zero point of the Baden State Survey (Soldner coordinate system).

The old Mannheim observatory played an important role in the survey of Europe and was used as a secondary station as an astronomical station for triangulation in the Rhenish triangular network (surveyed from 1867 to 1877).

The survey pillar was built in 1870 on the observatory platform by Prof. Jordan and was mentioned in the general report on European degree measurement from 1870. (Quote: "The costs incurred were about 200 guilders for one pillar. Carlsruhe, March 1871. Jordan.")

All measurements, including the astronomical ones, refer to the center of the degree measurement pillar, whose height above sea level is 129 meters. The helmet pole of the church tower in Mundenheim served as the zero point. "

A beautiful old and well-kept building built between 1772 and 1774. The Mannheim observatory was located in the observatory tower built between 1772 and 1774 and remained in operation until 1880. The observatory was then moved to Karlsruhe and in 1898 finally to the Königstuhl near Heidelberg, where the successor institute still exists today as the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory.
