As a tree in the middle of the world the highest point of the Gusterberg is called southeast of Kremsmünster (Upper Austria). The 488 m high mountain offers a wide view from the Alps to Berchtesgaden and the Bohemian border. He was therefore chosen in 1817 as a fundamental point of the Upper Austrian Land Surveying. The tree itself was a centuries-old, huge linden tree, which had to be felled in 1929 because of a lightning strike. As a precaution, in 1916 a new linden had been planted nearby, which now has a circumference of almost 3 meters.
The name referred to this widely visible tree and is now used for the since 1911 there existing inn.
For the exact measurement and mapping of Austria-Hungary, the military geographic institute established in 1817 five coordinate systems with clearly visible or culturally significant survey points as their respective zero points.
