The Ronald McDonald House in Essen was opened in 2005 after the last architectural design by the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. It is a temporary home for families with seriously ill children who are being treated in the Essen University Hospital.

The McDonald’s Children's Aid Foundation builds and operates “Ronald McDonald Houses” and “Ronald McDonald Oases” and is related to the McDonald’s fast food chain. The foundation cares for families of seriously ill children and works for them. The foundation was founded in 1987 as Ronald McDonald Children's Aid and was given its current name in 1997. The McDonald’s Children's Aid Foundation is a subsidiary of the Ronald McDonald House Charities. It cooperates closely with McDonald’s in Germany and also serves the parent company as an advertising medium.

The first chairwoman of the supervisory board was the SPD politician and former Bundestag president Annemarie Renger. Her successor was Rita Süssmuth in 1997

Worth seeing house of the Viennese artist Hundertwasser. It is not as consistently built and extensive as the Hundertwasser House in Vienna.
The house in Essen also serves a different purpose, because it is affiliated with the university clinic and offers accommodation to seriously ill children and their families.
