The Baumberge (popularly known as the Sandberge) are an inland dune landscape in the Tegeler Forst nature reserve in the Berlin district of Heiligensee (Reinickendorf district). Like other inland dunes, the Baumberge were blown up at the end of the Weichselian and Würm ice ages, i.e. a little more than 10,000 years ago. The 30-meter-high Baumberge dune is impressive at any time of year. It is due to military exercises by the Allies that the thin humus layer was repeatedly torn up and the dune was not forested.
The special feature of this nature reserve is its dry grassland communities. In addition to typical dune vegetation with silver and red bentgrass meadows, there are sandy heaths with heather and hairy broom, as well as subcontinental blue-shaded meadows on alkaline soils. In clay and calcareous areas, some extremely rare plant species such as the pasqueflower have been preserved.
During the occupation, French tanks practiced here.
