The Imperial Palace of Kyoto served the imperial family until the relocation of the capital to Tokyo in 1869 as a residence.

Visits are unfortunately not so easy. Only on five days in spring and autumn is the Imperial Palace open to the general public.

Update: During my last visit to Kyoto in July 2019, the Imperial Palace was open to visitors. The entrance was free. Unfortunately, I do not know if this is always the case.

From 1331 to 1869, the Gosho was the seat of the Japanese Imperial Family and, if only briefly, the center of politics, at least continuously the center of all sorts of court stories and intrigues. Until 1869, the area of today's Gyoen Park was home to both the imperial palace and the houses of aristocratic society.
