Located on the Sierra de Sintra, the Castelo Dos Mouros is next to the Palacio da Pena and offers wonderful views due to its altitude.
Erected by the Arabs during the 8th and 9th centuries as a defensive enclave (to guard the dirt roads that linked Sintra to Lisbon, Cascais and Mafra) and conquered in the 12th century by the Christians of Don Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, still it preserves two Romanesque gates and some frescoes from the old medieval necropolis.

What can you say about this place. One of the best castles I have ever visited. Built on a wide rocky plateau it has a long impressive and well kept outer wall. The vantage points from the variety of towers are super scenic. I visited Pena Palace in the morning and the castle in the afternoon, all in one long hike. I have got to say it was one of the best one day trips I have had anywhere in the world. Both locations are truly world class, well done Portugal, you have so much to offer the visitor.
