In every season a wonderful way through the vastness of the former salt pans with their countless canals and lakes, which are an ideal breeding and feeding area for waterfowl (flamingos, gray and egrets, avocets, plovers, terns, swans and ducks).

Already in the 12th century salt was obtained at this point. In the 15th century, the citizens of Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone received the privilege of the salt trade from the king. Over time, the salt mines reached an extent of up to 180 hectares. In the 20th century, the salt workers were gradually replaced by machines until 1969, the salt extraction was stopped at Villeneuve. Today, the former salt pans are protected as a nature reserve.
