Here in the DNT joined from 6 February 1919 to 21 May 1920, the Weimar National Assembly. The officially constitutional German National Assembly was the constituent parliament of the Weimar Republic. Venue was until September 1919 Weimar, not the politically heated Reich capital Berlin.

The Theaterplatz in Weimar, with its Goethe-Schiller Monument, is the forecourt of the German National Theater. It is part of the pedestrian zone of Weimar's old town and is a listed building in its entirety.

On the west side of the square stands the National Theater, with the Goethe-Schiller Monument in front of it. The new Goethe Department Store occupies the north side.

The House of the Weimar Republic and the Wittumspalais (Wittum Palace) share the east side.

The south side is dominated by restaurants, although in house no. 1a, which partially still dates back to the time of its construction, Johanna Schopenhauer (1766–1838) occasionally held her literary salon.

Next to the classical theater there is a large department store, in front of which is the Goethe-Schiller monument created by Ernst Rietschel. Opposite is the Wittumspalais, in which the famous round table of Duchess Anna Amalia took place. This building, erected in 1866 by the state master builder Johann Gottfried Schlegel, is also the first on this site. Its west wing was in line with the city wall that still existed at the time. A lane leads past this to the arsenal, which in turn takes its name from the arsenal. Next to it is the old wagon shed, which today in turn houses the House of the Weimar Republic.

This monument to the two poet laureates is THE landmark of Weimar. The original was dedicated in 1875, and copies can be admired in Cleveland, Milwaukee, and San Francisco. Despite their actual height difference, the poets are exactly the same height and both hold a laurel wreath.

Almost every tourist wants to take a photo in front of the monument to the two German poets - it's almost a miracle that there hasn't been a queue for entry here yet. But once you've seen it, the 'mandatory programme' is over and you can relax and explore the rest of the inner city, some of which is well worth seeing.

The Goethe-Schiller monument has stood in front of the German National Theater since 1857. Its predecessor building was once one of the most important places of work for the two Weimar Classical poets. The monument was designed by the Dresden sculptor Ernst Rietschel. The bronze casting was carried out by the Munich foundryman Ferdinand von Miller.

In the former Bauhaus exhibition, this house has been rededicated to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Weimar Republic. The National Theater would actually be a better place, since the National Assembly met there in 1919, which the Weimar Republic founded as the first German democracy. But everything doesn’t fit into the DNT and that’s why the city fathers decided in favor of this building.
