This is the southern part of a 12 km long waterfront promenade, partly carved into the rock. This part goes from Opadija to Lovran and was completed in 1911. The path was only named Franz-Joseph-Promenade in 1996, when people began to reflect on the touristic Habsburg heritage. In the Yugoslav period it was called Matko-Laginja-Promenade and during the Italian rule (from 1918) Lungomare. Along the promenade are still many more or less well-preserved, pompous villas from the imperial period and in Opatija hotels from the time when it was a fashionable Austro-Hungarian seaside resort.
