Say to the Devil's Bridge

According to a legend, the first devil's bridge was built by the devil. The Uri failed again and again at the construction of a bridge. Finally, a Landammann called out very desperate: "Do sell the Tyfel e Brigg bue!" (There the devil is to build a bridge!) Hardly said, this was already before the people of Uri and proposed a pact before them. He would build the bridge and in return he would get the soul of the one who was the first to cross the bridge. After the devil had built the bridge, the cunning Uri sent a Geissbock over the bridge. The devil was very angry about this trick and fetched a towering stone, with which he wanted to smash the bridge. However, he met a pious woman who carved a cross on the stone. The Devil was so confused by the sign of God that he missed the bridge when the stone was thrown. The rock fell down the entire Schöllenen Gorge to below the village of Göschenen and has since been called "Devil's Stone".

In 1973, the 2,000-ton Teufelsstein was moved 127 meters for 300,000 francs to make way for the Gotthard motorway. The displacement of the Devil's Stone is blamed in a modern expansion of folk legend for the inexplicable accumulation of traffic accidents at kilometer 4 of the 17-kilometer Gotthard road tunnel.

The plaque on the bridge states that as early as 1200 the people of Urschnen - who knows, perhaps with the help of the devil - achieved a masterpiece. By building the Devil's Bridge they conquered the wild Schöllenen Gorge, which had previously been considered impassable. This made the Gotthard route the shortest north-south connection. In 1595 the wooden bridge was replaced by a stone bridge. It fell victim to a storm in 1888. In 1830, another bridge was built with the construction of the drivable road, which was replaced by the current Devil's Bridge in 1956.
