ハイキング
The Eppelsberg is a cinder cone volcano that spewed lava 230,000 years ago.
A second volcanic eruption led to the light-colored tuff deposits.
During the third lava eruption, the "black lava band" and above it the "colorful layers" developed in intervals of eruptions and resting phases. The eruption of the Laacher See volcano 12,900 years ago added a layer of pumice on top.
Step-like rock slides are a special feature of the Eppelsberg volcano.

A cross-section of a cinder volcano reveals the entire spectrum of tephra, the totality of volcanic loose matter, ejected during the eruption. These include fine ash, small stones called "lapilli," bizarre cinder blocks, and thick chunks called "bombs."
