It is the largest English landscaped garden in Switzerland. There is a lot to see there: Birseck Castle, small caves, small lakes and various wild places baptized with romantic names.
The Ermitage monument landscape includes the English landscape garden, the Birseck castle complex, the mill complex and the forest houses.
The Ermitage was designed and developed in three phases (1785, 1793, 1812) according to different concepts: The first complex from 1785 was based on the ideal of the unspoiled natural landscape, in which nature was left as a spiritual universal power in the sense of Rousseau without artificial intervention.
