In the 13th century, two chambers were first created in the Buntsandstein rock.
Around 1600 the Franciscan Roméry had a two-storey chapel built. Its upper floor was connected to the upper rock chamber.
In 1833, the later Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm IV received the ruin as a gift. On his behalf, a funeral chapel for Johann von Böhmen (later called "The Blind Man") was built there by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in 1834/35. Between 1838 and 1945 the bones of Johann were buried in a sarcophagus in the chapel.
Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) used the remaining part of the old building, had stained glass windows installed, and built a chapel with triple arcade windows and an Italian-style bell gable above. The king's bones were placed in a classical sarcophagus.
In 1842 an altar was added, which had been designed according to the suggestions of the Prussian king. The royal family tree was integrated into the chapel as a fresco.

Grave chapel for John of Bohemia and the Kaštel Kastel (Hermitage at Kastel), a refuge built by monks in the sandstone cliff on a plateau above the valley. From there you have a wide view over the Saar Valley.

There is an entrance fee to visit the Klause Kastel (I think 3.50 euros for adults, children significantly less). Therefore, when planning, please remember to have some money with you for entry. There are also opening times. These last until 6 p.m. in most months.
Currently (May 2020) the access was locked (that's why I only remember the entrance prices imprecisely). There was no sign; it may have been decided because of the pandemic prevention (Corona).
