The Friars Minor Monastery, the Hortuspark and the city gates are a reminder of the city's rich Hanseatic history. Until 1932 Harderwijk was on the Zuiderzee (the current IJsselmeer and the marginal seas). The trade of yesteryear has shifted from the quay to the beach. Nice shops with a wide range and the lively market square with many street cafes and restaurants invite you to enjoy.

Harderwijk is a town and municipality in the Dutch province of Gelderland with 48,910 inhabitants. The village of Hierden, which has 3,085 inhabitants, also belongs to the municipality.

The not insignificant farming village of Selhorst was already in the Middle Ages in the vicinity of Harderwijk. The town itself was first mentioned in 1231 (Herderewich), when Count Otto II von Geldern gave the market town town rights.

It developed into a nationally important fishing and port city, joined the Hanseatic League in the 15th century and had relatively good land connections to the Rhine (karweg, cart road to Arnhem).
