      The Castello di Vezio high above Varenna is said to have been built by the Lombard Queen Theudelinde, who lived from 570 - 627.
      It offers one of the most beautiful views across Lake Como from the eastern arm of the lake over Bellagio, into the western arm of the lake and on via Menaggio to the northern arm of the lake.

          We hiked through the village of Vezio to the castle ruins. The Castello di Vezio castle ruins with falconry are a nice place to spend some time. The castle courtyard has a wonderful garden. The entrance fee is quite cheap and the castle is an interesting place with a small museum and changing exhibitions by local artists. There is an interesting information sheet on the history of the castle and falconry in German and English. There is a small café in the entrance area of the Castello.

          The castle ruins are located above the municipality of Varenna and after the visit you can hike down a sunny path into the valley. The complex used to be directly connected to the village by walls. The Castello di Vezio was built in the late 11th and early 12th centuries. The castle ruins have been open to the public since 1999. There has been a bird of prey show since 2003.

            The Castle of Vezio is a medieval fortress that has stood for more than a thousand years on the promontory overlooking Varenna. The terrace adjacent to the castle offers a breathtaking view of Lake Como. Also noteworthy is the permanent exhibit dedicated to the Lariosaurus, an extinct marine reptile from the Middle Triassic, which gave rise to a legend similar to that of the Loch Ness monster.
