The arch was made in the 1st century AD - as evidenced by the inscription L. VITRVVIVS. L. L. CERDO/ ARCHITECTVS[1] - built by the architect Lucius Vitruvius Cerdo, freedman of a Lucius Vitruvius, to the glory of the Gavier family, not on the current site but on Via Postumia, where the location of the arch is now marked in the pavement has been.
