The Cobbler, or Ben Arthur to give it the anglicised version of its traditional name, shrugs off the fact it is not quite lofty enough to earn Munro status by using an ostentatious display of awesome rock scenery and exhibitionist flair. Despite not reaching the height of its four Munro neighbours, hikes to The Cobbler take you to the crown of the undisputed King of the Arrochar Alps.

The Cobbler is one of the most charismatic of all of Scotland's mountains. 100 feet (30 m) shy of Munro status, it manages to outshine its higher neighbours with a mixture of technical challenge and a freakish, yet undeniably impressive, shape.

Two of its three summits can only be surmounted by rock climbing but the highest and central summit can be reached by hikers. However, the very top, a bizarre rock formation, is not so simple. To reach its apex, you ‘thread the needle’, passing through a gap in the rock, before scrambling up a narrow ledge with a sickening drop to your right in order to gain the summit platform. It’s scary but straightforward in dry conditions.

Ben Arthur — known as the Cobbler — has the most distinctive outline of any mountain in the Southern Highlands and makes a fantastic short day out. Extremely popular, the path on the way up has been improved in recent years and once past the initial zig zags makes a pleasant ascent. Standing at 2,900 feet (884 metres), it is not the tallest mountain but it is dearly loved by many.

The hike to Cobbler takes you through the picturesque landscape of the Arrochar Alps, offering breathtaking views along the way. The path, which rises from the shores of Loch Long, is well developed and takes walkers through a diverse natural backdrop that becomes increasingly spectacular with every meter of elevation.

One of the highlights of the climb is the moment when the summit becomes fully visible for the first time, a sight that immediately makes you forget the hardships of the climb. The summit section of the Cobbler consists of three peaks, with the central peak marking the highest point. For the more adventurous, climbing the central peak offers an additional challenge: the so-called "window" climb, a narrow crevice that leads to a narrow ridge. Although this passage does not require climbing equipment, it should only be attempted in dry conditions and by hikers who are not afraid of heights.

Despite its popularity as a hiking destination, the Cobbler is no easy feat. The Scottish weather can change quickly and the paths can become slippery when wet, particularly due to the mica schist that forms the rock of the mountain. Thorough preparation, appropriate equipment and carrying navigation aids are therefore essential.

This route explores both main peaks of the Cobbler before descending on a rugged path between the two. Alternatively the route can be made easier by returning the same way.

Knobbly, gnarled and unmistakable, Ben Arthur – affectionately known as The Cobbler due to its shoemaker-esque silhouette – is just 30m short of Munro status. Nonetheless, the culmination of its ascent, which involves clambering though a rock window onto a smooth and sloping summit boulder perched airily above empty space, is amongst the most thrilling top-outs of any peak.
