Alp Gritsch Valüna, Steg
Alp to the east above the , Valüna, Steg . Gritsch is the highest alp in Liechtenstein: 1600 m above sea level. (Retta) up to 2570 m above sea level (Naafkopf), alpine building at 1897 m above sea level; Total area 341.6 ha, of which 106 ha is productive pasture. The owner is the Schaaner Alpgenossenschaft Gritsch; this also includes the Alp Mittlervalorsch (→ Valorsch). First documented mention in 1378 («Gralitsch»); Name probably from Old Rhaeto-Romanic alp grialits (ram's alp).
The oldest surviving alpine statute in Liechtenstein regulates, among other things, the distribution of use of the Gritsch and Guschg Alps to the Schaan village parts of St. Lorenz (Gritsch) and St. Peter (Guschg) as well as the demarcation between the two village parts and thus the cooperative membership of their inhabitants.
The Gritsch and Guschg alpine cooperatives have had joint statutes since 1862 (changed in 1926, 1990 and 2007). For centuries, Gritsch could only be reached from the Valüna via the steep Retta. In 1869 a road was built between Sücka and Valüna, and it was not until 1920 that a road suitable for horse and cart was built on the continuation to Gritsch. Previously, butter and cheese had been transported from Gritsch to the Valüna by means of two-wheeled carts. 1823 Establishment of a stable. The maximum stocking of Gritsch was set in the cooperative statutes in 1862 at 90 cows and in 1916 by the State Alpine Commission at 90 pushes of four feet each. Since 1997 it has been 115 livestock units. The Gritsch cooperative in Schaan had its own alpine dairy up until the 20th century. Since 1960 only cattle have been summered on Gritsch.

The alp is unfortunately not served, but this is not necessary in the immediate vicinity of the Palatinate Hut. On the alp you are always surprised with special animals, my last hike was a very special kind of chickens 😊
