The hut is located between the Sasso Lungo and the Fünffingerspitze, literally wedged into the Sasso Lungo gap, and offers a beautiful view of the Sella group, Marmolada and the Fassa Dolomites.

The cable car up here is a small, fine adventure and the hut of the cable car station is the starting point for the very beautiful Sassolungo circumnavigation.

Spectacular location in the Langkofel saddle with a view of the Sella Pass, Sella massif and Marmolada. But what really makes the hut special is its history. Today it is run by Heini Demetz, Toni Demetz's brother, and his family. They are really good hosts and you feel very comfortable in the hut.
The history of the hut (built in 1953) and also of the mountain guides of Val Badia can also be felt in many pictures in the guest rooms, some of which date back to around 1900.

    よくある質問

What is the best way to reach Rifugio Toni Demetz, especially for those without a car?

While the hut is accessible via various hiking paths from Santa Cristina (Monte Pana), Alpe di Siusi, and Passo Sella, a unique cable car from Passo Sella offers a direct and adventurous way up. For those relying on public transport, reaching Passo Sella by bus would be the primary option, followed by the cable car ride. It's advisable to check local bus schedules to Passo Sella, as services can vary by season.

Are there any family-friendly or beginner hiking routes that lead to or start from Rifugio Toni Demetz?

Reaching Rifugio Toni Demetz itself involves challenging mountain terrain, making it less suitable for very young children or absolute beginners. However, the cable car from Passo Sella provides a less strenuous ascent. From the hut, the popular Sassolungo circuit trail is a demanding full-day hike. For families or beginners seeking easier options, exploring trails around Passo Sella or Monte Pana at lower elevations might be more appropriate, with the hut serving as a distant viewpoint rather than a direct destination.

Can I bring my dog to Rifugio Toni Demetz or on the surrounding trails?

Generally, dogs are permitted on hiking trails in the Dolomites, but it's crucial to keep them on a leash, especially due to grazing animals and wildlife. Regarding the hut itself, it's best to contact Rifugio Toni Demetz directly to inquire about their specific policy for dogs inside the refuge or on their terrace, as rules can vary. The cable car also has specific regulations for transporting animals.

What are the typical weather conditions at Rifugio Toni Demetz, and what should I wear?

At 2,685 meters (8,809 feet) elevation, weather conditions can change rapidly and dramatically. Even in summer, temperatures can be cool, and strong winds, fog, or sudden thunderstorms are common. Hikers should always pack layers, including a warm fleece or jacket, waterproof and windproof outer shell, hat, and gloves. Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are essential. Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses) is also vital due to the high altitude.

Is Rifugio Toni Demetz accessible during winter, or are there specific winter activities?

Rifugio Toni Demetz is typically open from mid-June to early October. Outside of this summer season, the hut is closed, and the cable car from Passo Sella does not operate. Winter conditions in the Sassolungo Group are extreme, with heavy snow and avalanche risk, making access very challenging and suitable only for experienced mountaineers with appropriate gear and knowledge of alpine dangers. It is not generally considered a winter hiking destination for the public.

Are there accommodation options available at Rifugio Toni Demetz, and how can I book?

Yes, Rifugio Toni Demetz offers lodging with around 20-29 beds, providing a vital early start for climbers and hikers. Staying overnight allows visitors to experience the unique high-alpine atmosphere and witness the evening light on the Dolomites. To book accommodation, it is highly recommended to contact the hut directly, preferably through their official website or by phone, well in advance, especially during peak season. You can find their contact information on their website: www.tonidemetz.it.

What kind of food and drink can I expect at Rifugio Toni Demetz?

The hut features a restaurant serving typical Tyrolean cuisine, which often includes hearty mountain dishes. Visitors frequently praise their fresh, homemade cakes. They also offer gluten- and lactose-free options, catering to various dietary needs. You can enjoy meals and drinks from the terrace, often with spectacular views of climbers on the nearby rock faces.

What are the notable natural features or viewpoints around Rifugio Toni Demetz?

The hut itself is majestically embedded between the towering peaks of the Sassolungo and Cinque Dita (5 Fingers) mountains, offering breathtaking panoramic views. From its elevated position, you can see Val Gardena, the Sella massif, Marmolada, Civetta, and Monte Pelmo. The entire Sassolungo Group is part of an ancient coral reef, formed over 220 million years ago, adding a fascinating geological dimension to the stunning landscape.

Are there any specific climbing routes or via ferratas accessible directly from the hut?

Rifugio Toni Demetz is a prime starting point for numerous rock climbing routes within the Sassolungo Group, with 26 climbing routes just steps away. In summer 2022, a new via ferrata, "Furcela de Saslonch," was also added near the hut, offering another challenging option for experienced climbers. These routes require appropriate gear, experience, and knowledge of alpine safety.

How long does it typically take to hike to Rifugio Toni Demetz from Passo Sella?

From Passo Sella, the most direct hiking route to Rifugio Toni Demetz involves a steep ascent. While the cable car offers a quick ride, hiking up can take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your fitness level and the specific path chosen. The terrain is rocky and challenging, requiring good physical condition and appropriate footwear.

What makes Rifugio Toni Demetz unique compared to other huts in the Dolomites?

Rifugio Toni Demetz stands out due to its dramatic location, literally wedged into the Sassolungo gap at 2,685 meters, offering a feeling of being "suspended in the sky." Its poignant history, built in memory of Toni Demetz, and the continued management by the Demetz family, provide a warm, personal touch. The combination of its challenging access, historical significance, and unparalleled panoramic views makes it a truly unforgettable high-alpine experience.
