Due to the needs of the Meyer shipyard, which builds ever larger ships, the Ems deepening became necessary. This made the continuous silting of the river imperative. Since then, the resulting excavation has been carried out via large-volume pipelines to new, so-called flushing fields, as can be seen here over the viewing platform.
