The Schulensmeer is located in the west of the Belgian province of Limburg, in the valley of the Demer on the territory of Herk-de-Stad (part of the municipality of Schulen) and Lummen (part of the municipality of Linkhout). It is named after the church village of Schulen, which is located on the road between Hasselt and Diest.

The Schulensmeer is 2.8 km long, approximately 180 m wide and 7 to 8 m deep. This makes the Schulensmeer the largest inland water in Flanders when it fills up to the outer dikes. The lake covers 90 hectares, surrounded by the inner dike, which expands to 150 hectares, surrounded by an outer dike, during large water inflows, on the territory of Linkhout and Schulen. The lake is fed by water from the Demer. The Mangelbeek, the Zwarte Beek, the Herk, the Gete, the Velpe and the Begijnenbeek also flow in the same valley.
