Away from the busy city, although with the hum of the motorway in the background, is the park around the Weltervijver. One of the most beautiful places in Heerlen, where you imagine yourself back in the nostalgia of the times. There are few places in Heerlen where you can taste the medieval history of Heerlen so authentically. The pond, the water mill, the castle Strijthagen to Welten, the nearby motte of its predecessor and the church in the background - already mentioned in a charter from 1065 - will amaze you as a visitor. The Welterpark has always been the part of Heerlen where parents went for a walk with their children on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. This was especially popular in the nineties, when the waterwheel of the mill still made its sloshing sound and the swans in the mill pond were a feast for the eyes.
