    The Kilianskirche on Kaiserstraße in Heilbronn is the church of the Kilianskirchengemeinde Heilbronn in the Evangelische Landeskirche in Württemberg. It is a Gothic hall church made of Heilbronn sandstone, the origin of which dates back at least to the 11th century. Its west tower by Hans Schweiner is one of the first important Renaissance buildings north of the Alps. In the church is the altar by Hans Seyfer from 1498, which is considered a masterpiece of the carving art of late German Gothic. The Baden-Wuerttemberg Monument Foundation designated the facility as a Monument of the Month for December 2016.

      From November to February, the church can be visited from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from March to October from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. without a guided tour.

      Unfortunately, the church cannot be visited during services, devotions, rehearsals and concerts.

      A tower climb costs € 1.50 for adults and € 0.50 for children.

              Romanesque church, around 1100

              Around 1100 there were two churches in Heilbronn. It is assumed that the Michaelsbasilika from 741 stood on the site of today's Kilianskirche. Even if there is some evidence to suggest this, this assumption has not yet been proven. However, excavations from 1880 confirm that there was already a sacred building on this site before or around 1100. This early Romanesque church was about 10 by 11 m and had an apse to the east.

              Early Gothic church, around 1280

              Around 1280, instead of the small Romanesque church, there was a much larger early Gothic church, the exact date of construction of which is unknown. This church had a basilica shape with low aisles, a short single-aisled chancel and two side chancel flank towers. In the 13th century, the church was consecrated to Saint Kilian, who had worked in Würzburg, at the behest of the diocese. The building was first mentioned in a letter of indulgence in 1297 as the church of St. Kilians.

              West tower porch, around 1400

              Since another pair of towers was planned on the west side of the church, a three-part west porch was added around 1400. This vestibule had a south portal (to today's Kirchbrunnenstraße) and a north portal (to today's Kaiserstraße) and is about 18 m high. However, the planned west towers were not built at the time.
