To knock such holes in rock - who can think of it? How did the Romans know that copper was being mined here? This space raises many more questions. The place is definitely impressive.

If you come from the Butzenbachtal, you should keep to the left down the mountain if you want the shorter way to Ramstein Castle. If you have more time, follow the designated hiking path up the mountain to the right.

Putzloch denotes a former Roman mine in which copper ores were mined and a quarry from which stones were extracted for the construction of the Porta Nigra:

It looks wild here and it's worth exploring a little.

If a visit to the mine shafts is still possible today by arrangement (as in the past), one would have to ask the Heimatverein Butzweiler.

The Roman copper mine »Pützlöcher« between Kordel and Butzweiler is one of the oldest in Germany and means »water hole«.

In the 2nd century, ores such as malachite and azurite were dug here at a depth of 20 metres. However, these were not available as rich deposits, so the Romans later focused on the nearby quarry. The stones from the quarry were used, among other things, for the construction of the Porta Nigra.
