In this place far from the town and the houses, during the terrible plague of 1630 the sick were confined, to avoid contagion and meet their death. In the municipality of Asiago, the epidemic caused 2000 deaths out of 4000 inhabitants!

In the following years (perhaps in 1665, as per the inscription above the entrance), this small church was built as a vote of thanks from the survivors for having escaped the plague.

Curiosity about the origin of the word 'Lazzaretto'. It seems to derive from Lazarus, the leper protagonist of a Gospel parable and then elected as protector of the plague victims; or from (S. Maria di) Nazarèth, the first quarantine place regularly established in Venice; or finally from a fusion of Lazarus and Nazareth.
