        Paul Verhoeven's film adaptation of Hauff's fairy tale is one of the great DEFA classics from 1950. But hardly anyone knows that many of the Black Forest scenes were filmed in Thuringia.
        Since September 1st, 2018 a plaque has been marking the place where the Dutch Michel (Erwin Geschonneck) tore his heart from Peter Munk (Lutz Moik) in Lauchagrund, in the "Felsenthal" near the fork in the road to Inselsberg and Tanzbuche.

                Although the story takes place in the Black Forest, outdoor shots for fairy tale films about the “Cold Heart” were not only shot there, but sometimes in completely different locations: Thuringian Forest instead of the Black Forest and Wannsee instead of Schluchsee.                                       The Cold Heart was filmed in the Babelsberg DEFA studios in the spring and summer of 1950. The outdoor shots took place in Lauchagrund and Felsenthal in Bad Tabarz as well as in the area around Schwarzburg, especially for the distant views. A team of well over fifty people were involved in this film. The Cold Heart was the first GDR color film (Agfacolor) as well as the first DEFA fairy tale film staged with actors.
