At this monumental toll house on the main road between Deventer – Klarenbeek – Loenen – Groenendaal and Arnhem, a fee used to be levied. Passers-by who passed the toll house had to pay this to be allowed to continue. The toll was levied for the construction and maintenance of waterways and roads and bridges.

Retrospective: ‘t Tolhuis in Loenen

Toll collector is an old profession that used to be practiced in the area around Loenen. Since 1844, a white house has stood on the Groenendaalseweg, which is still clearly recognizable as a toll house. It is located directly on the road and viewing windows on both sides offer a view of the approaching traffic.
In the past, the toll collector could see road users approaching from far away in his home. People did not have to pay much, but 5 cents for a cart and horse was still a considerable sum at that time that people tried to avoid. People chose back routes through the woods to avoid paying the toll.
The collection of toll money used to be a source of income for the landlord. Tolls were levied on land and waterways. The proceeds went to the owner, but later benefited the maintenance and construction of roads. At that time, it was a kind of road tax. Later it was customary for tolls that were owned by the municipality to be publicly leased.
