Utendorf is clearly mentioned as a location in the document that is dated from 1348. This small village was a Henneberg fief and since 1264 the property of the Lords of Kühndorf. Some of the goods came to the Rohr monastery in 1264, but the entire village to the Kühndorf monastery in 1307. The place burned down completely in 1380 and does not appear again in old scripts until 1536.

In the vicinity of Utendorf in Thuringia, medieval desolations (such as "Dolmersdorf", "Tränkried", "Diemershain") point to an eventful settlement history.

The church, which towers about 27 m high on the mountain, is one of the most graceful in this area. It was rebuilt in 1821 after the previous church collapsed immediately after a service was over. The foundation walls date from the Middle Ages. Likewise, the lower part of the tower with loopholes is a remnant of the old tower.

But also due to the remains of the former defensive walls and the still preserved gatehouse of the churchyard, the church hill of Utendorf deserves special attention.
