The pavilion of the k. u.k. Highest court in Hietzing

The construction of the Stadtbahn was the largest infrastructure project in Vienna around 1900. Otto Wagner (1841-1918), the pioneer of modern architecture, was entrusted with the artistic design of the new means of mass transport, which still characterizes the cityscape today. The erection of a separate pavilion for Emperor Franz Joseph and the "All Highest Court" at the Hietzing station goes back to his initiative. The building, completed in 1899, was given an unmistakable, representative exterior and a sumptuous Art Nouveau interior, which was tailored entirely to the needs of the Emperor was.

The Wiener Stadtbahn was a public transport system in Vienna that operated under this name from 1898 to 1989. It consisted of six individual routes, some of which also served suburbs. The Stadtbahn was designed by the famous architect Otto Wagner and was originally a steam-powered railway. Later it was electrified and served by tramcars. The Stadtbahn is considered one of the main works of Art Nouveau in Vienna and is now a listed building.
Today, the former Stadtbahn routes are part of the Vienna U-Bahn (lines U4 and U6) and the Vienna S-Bahn (line S45). You can visit the historic stations and structures of the Stadtbahn or take a ride on the modern trains that run on the old tracks.
