The church was built on behalf of the Augustinian Canons of Schlehdorf Monastery and consecrated on August 1, 1344 by a representative of the Bishop of Freising. Once a month, a priest from Schlehdorf celebrated Holy Mass here. Around 1670 the church was redesigned in Baroque style: the windows were enlarged and the current altar was erected. Another renovation took place in 1778: today's onion dome was built, today's pulpit was built in, and the wooden ceiling was replaced by a vault. The pews were made from the wood. During the secularization, the church was classified as “dispensable” and on June 10, 1807 it was bought by the three dwarf farmers under the condition that it should not be used as a chapel. From 1819, however, services were again celebrated in St. Margareth. Almost a century later, in 1902, the three farmers, or their descendants, ceded the church to the Free State of Bavaria for repairs, the right to celebrate God
