The old, mighty and well-fortified residential tower is 20 meters high, its lateral dimensions are 8 meters outside and 6.60 meters inside. It was built in the 12th century from columnar basalt in the large Salian-Staufian style. The tower was first mentioned in a marriage certificate in 1380. This makes it the oldest secular building in Porz.

In today's district of Cologne-Porz-Zündorf there is a former medieval residential tower above the "Groov" and the former towpath along the Rhine. The eye-catching, 20 meter high, square building in NiederZOZZORF is very distinctive and has a defiant effect. It is made of basalt stones, has five floors and a flat pyramidal roof. The windows are very narrow, some of which used to be loopholes.
The tower was first mentioned in a document in 1380, but is probably older and was built in the 13th century. Quarry stones and field stones were used as building material and no bricks.

Historically, next to this tower was a farm belonging to the Lords of Zündorf, later owned by the Metternich family. In 1771 this courtyard was demolished and replaced by a new building. The two-storey residential building right next to the residential tower has been preserved to this day.
When in the 15th century the dukes of Berg Zündorf temporarily awarded a Rhine toll as a trading place, regional historical research in the 19th century suggested that the tower was a customs tower. This hypothesis is not correct, but is still used today and has found its way into the literature.

Today, art exhibitions are held in the former residential tower at various times of the year, organized by the Zündorfer Wehrturm e.V. association. (zuendorfer-wehrturm.de)
