The chapel of St. Nicholas - often called "Vexierkapelle" - was rebuilt from 1607 to 1613 on the site of a former castle of the Lords of Reifenberg. Around 1705, the expansion in the west was added. The striking tower with the onion dome was first built in 1788; the interior is neo-Gothic. Since the chapel is located on a more than 450 meter high mountain spur, it appears as a widely visible landmark in different views - perhaps this is the reason for the peculiar name "Vexierkapelle".

The square in front of the church offers a great view of the Franconian Switzerland - especially to the Walberla.

Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, to whom this church with the nickname "Vexierkapelle" in Reifenberg is dedicated, is - along with Saint Martin - probably one of the most popular saints of all. Almost every child in Germany - and far beyond - is probably familiar with his day of remembrance, December 6th.

On the eve of this day, the children used to put their shoes and boots in front of the door - which were of course cleaned with great care - so that Saint Nicholas could fill them with gifts during the night. In more agricultural areas, it was also customary for children to provide a small donation of food for the donkey, St. Nicholas' riding animal (according to another tradition, it was a gray horse).
