There are a number of beautiful buildings on the Grote Markt of Dendermonde that certainly deserve your attention. Starting with the town hall, rebuilt in a Gothic style after a fierce fire. The town hall was originally a cloth hall from the 14th century. The heraldic flags on the facade give the building and the entire Grote Markt a festive character.
The Belfry, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was originally a corner tower of the Cloth Hall. During an extension during the 15th century, the belfry was given the function of town hall. The old carillon was also lost during the fire in 1914. Since 1975 a new one has been installed with 49 bells. You will hear a tune playing every fifteen minutes during the walk.
All the way across the market square is the octagonal tower of the old Butcher's House. This is where butchers sold their meat products at the end of the 19th century.

The Grote Markt is centrally located in the historic city center of Dendermonde. The market was located in front of the castle, the residence of the lords of Dendermonde, and was most likely part of the castle square. The market square was probably built in the same period as the castle, which places the origins of this historic location at least in the 11th century. As early as the 14th century, the square had grown into a central meeting and market place where urban proclamations and national ordinances were proclaimed and justice was administered. The most important administrative, legal and commercial functions were grouped around the market square, of which the Vleeshuis and the town hall are the most recognizable witnesses.

The Grote Markt continues to fulfill its central function to this day. The iconic crescent shape with cobblestone construction that characterizes the market dates back at least to the 17th century according to cartographic material and reinforces the historic appearance and market character of the Grote Markt.

Dendermonde's Grote Markt is known as one of the most beautiful and pleasant squares in the country. While tasting a regional beer with a slice of head meat and mustard, you can relax from a terrace enjoying the many events, the clear sounds of the restored carillon or the strolling shoppers at the weekly Monday market. The bronze palm tree "Coconut" gives a modern touch to this historic site.
