Câmara de Lobos is a Portuguese city on the island of Madeira. It is considered the Madeiran fishing village par excellence and gained fame as British Prime Minister Winston Churchill immortalized the site on a painting. A memorial plaque in the center reminds of this historical event. The place name means cave of monk seals. Today, however, hardly more monk seals are sighted on this stretch of coast.

A touristy and lively little town on the picturesque fishing bay. Take some time to linger. If you don't like the hustle and bustle, choose a less popular time of day. If you don't like the tourist prices in the restaurants, bring your own food. You'll find a place where you can sit down and enjoy the view.
Câmara de Lobos was the first settlement on Madeira and therefore has great historical significance for the island. The town also has a centuries-old fishing tradition.

Of course, the place is still worth recommending, but with the sign that tourism has taken over here.
By the way, the boat with the dried fish (Bacelhau) no longer exists either. Unfortunately, I don't know of any restaurants here where you can expect the usual, moderate prices. So I'd rather pack a tasty drink and a homemade baguette in my backpack and sit down with the fisherman in the boat, high up on the mountaintop of Camara do Lobos.
As a hiking trail from Funchal, I suggest the Levada Piornais from Estadio Barraios, the so-called city levada. Reachable by HF Bus No. 8 from Avenida de Mar heading west.
