The sanctuary stands on a rocky spur (260 m) on the left bank of the Marecchia river, in a strategic position between Montebello, Pietracuta, Verucchio and San Marino.
Its name takes us back to the ancient Romans who called it “Saxum Jani- Sasso di Giano” and there probably must have been a pagan temple dedicated to him.
Saiano formerly belonged to the territory and Parish of Pietracuta, Diocese of Montefeltro. Then it passed to the Parish of S. Pietro di Montebello. Its name appears frequently among the lists of Castles that passed from one lord to another.
