According to the chronicles, the most important social and religious activities were held in this space. Bullfights were even held. However, until 1868, the square was mainly the home of the city's merchants. After the earthquake (magnitude 9 on the Ritcher scale), a large part of the cathedral was damaged, as were the arches that surround the square. At that time, a process of beautification of the place began. The arcades were unified, the cathedral was improved and the merchants of the area were relocated.

The Plaza de Armas of Arequipa is one of the most important public squares in Arequipa and the founding place of the city. It is located in the historic center of Arequipa, surrounded by the Arequipa Cathedral to the north, the Portals of Arequipa to the east, south and west, the Church of La Compañía to the southeast and the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Merced to the south. In the center of the square there is a bronze font.

Arequipa's Plaza de Armas is one of the most beautiful in Peru. On the north side of the Plaza is the impressive, twin-towered Cathedral, founded in 1612 and largely rebuilt in the 19th Century having been repeatedly damaged by earthquakes and fire. Inside is fine Belgian organ and elaborately-carved wooden pulpit. The Plaza is surrounded on its other 3 sides by colonial arcaded buildings with many cafes and restaurants.
