The Castilla Canal is one of the most paradigmatic works of those carried out by the Duero Hydrographic Confederation and one of the most significant of the period of the Spanish Enlightenment. Linking Segovia with Santander through navigation canals, which would also serve to irrigate the land that was intended to be drained in the Nava lagoon and to plant tree plantations that would beautify the landscape, was a dream of the enlightened. The lack of economic means and the orographic difficulties reduced that dream to a navigation channel and limited irrigation along the 207 kilometers that it totals between its three branches: North, Campos and South.
