      The old town is a district of the university town of Passau in the Bavarian administrative district of Lower Bavaria with 3,067 inhabitants (4,679 including secondary residences) (population register as of December 31, 2005). The old town represents the historical center of Passau.
      The district extends from the tip of the town in the east to the Schanzlbrücke in the west. But it also includes a part to the left (north) of the Danube around the Oberhaus Fortress. The area, including the parts of the rivers, is 152.6 hectares.

                                              Passau (Latin: Batavium, Batava or Passavia, etc.) is an independent university town in the administrative district of Lower Bavaria in eastern Bavaria. It lies on the border with Austria and at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz and is therefore also called the “City of Three Rivers”.
                                              The first Celtic settlement was in the La Tène period on the old town hill with a Danube port at the height of today's old town hall.
                                              The Roman fort Batavis (Castra Batava) was built on the site of today's cathedral as part of the Limes fortifications. The name “Batavis” probably derives from the Germanic mercenaries from the Batavian tribe who were initially stationed there. The current name “Passau” probably developed from Batavis.
