The Dümmer is the second largest lake in Lower Saxony, the water area is 12.4 square kilometers and has a depth of 1.5 m. The water surface belongs to the district of Diepholz, a small part of the west bank to the dike is located in the district Vechta. The circuit around the lake is 18 km long. The western and southern banks are protected and is the breeding ground of many birds. The lake is traversed by the Hunte.
The Dümmer is nestled between the Dammer Mountains in the northwest and the Stemweder Berg in the southeast in the area of the Dümmer Nature Park, surrounded by the low and high moors of the Diepholzer Moorniederung.
