The Große Geiger, formerly also called Obersulzbacher Venediger and Heiliggeistkogel, is a 3360 m high mountain of the Venediger group on the main Alpine ridge on the border between the Austrian federal states of Tyrol in the south and Salzburg in the north. The mountain received its current name in 1855 from the Austrian pharmacist and cartographer Franz Keil. With its pronounced symmetrical pyramid shape and its mighty northwest wall, which rises at an altitude of 350 meters and an incline of 50 ° over the Obersulzbachkees glacier, it is the dominant landmark in the entire Obersulzbach valley. The mountain sends pronounced ridges in all four directions. Due to its easy accessibility, it is a popular touring and climbing destination. It was first climbed on August 20, 1871 by alpinist Richard Issler and mountain guide Michael Groder from the Johannishütte in the south.

if you want it a bit quieter, climb the Great Violinist 3360m. Easiest ascent over the Maurertal from the Essen Rostocker hut. Glacier equipment and alpine experience are an absolute advantage.

The great violinist (3360m) appears as a perfectly formed rock pyramid at the end of the Obersulzbachtal. An even better view of the famous 3000er of the Venedigergruppe you have from the Kürsingerhütte.

The great violinist is also good for beginners on the glacier side, glacier equipment is necessary. There are in total 3 different ascent routes, Nordgrat from the Kürsinger Hütte, Ostgrat and over the glacier from the Essen-Rostocker Hütte.
The last 100 hm scree and big rocks, but great views!
